Prince Edward Island is a great spot for a 7-14 day family getaway. We had a 10 hour drive from Massachusetts which allowed for stops in Bar Harbor, St. Andrews by the Sea and the Bay of Fundy. The island is absolutely gorgeous and reminds us of our love for Ireland and Scotland. Bright Green landscapes and rusty red sandstones make for a beautiful scenic contrast. There's a lot to do! Beaches, golf, music, seafood and all for a reasonable price.
Charlottetown is the main city on PEI and about 30 minute drive from Cavendish. There are great little restaurants and plenty of shopping in the main city center. Cruise ships pull in and out during the Summer. Cows Creamery is a staple on the island and must try. The city has a modern seaport vibe with vintage European architecture. Very cool.
Cavendish beach and the entire National Park on PEI was amazing. The beaches are the cleanest and most picturesque I have seen north of the Caribbean. There are walking and biking trails everywhere, and there's always an ocean view. The waters are warm and while there are quite a few people in the warm months, the beaches are quite large to accommodate all. Best of all were the red sandstone cliffs and rocks, a stark contrast from other North Atlantic beaches.
Capping off each day on PEI with fresh seafood is easy. Mussels and fish are relatively cheap and abundant. We particularly liked stopping at Doiron Fisheries in North Rustico after a long day and ordering off the boat seafood. Check out deep sea fishing out of Rustico as well. A lot of fun and educational for kids.
North Rustico Beach was our favorite beach in PEI. The beach was massive and the waters were chilly, but very clean. Kids enjoyed snorkeling to find baby lobsters and collecting seashells. Nice easy walk into town for lunch and bathrooms were located on site.
Our favorite thing to do on the island was visit the Beach Goats. The farm is located about an hour west of Cavendish, the main tourist town. It was well worth the drive. The kids could interact with the goats and they would come visit on our blanket. There was even a chance to paddleboard. The water was very warm, but the hit were the friendly goats.
